The West Midlands is a county in England, the county of the West Midlands falls within Midlands Region, and the European electoral region the West Midlands Region. The West Midlands has only existed since 1974 and 12 years later it lost all its powers as they were devolved to the 7 metropolitan boroughs that made up the West Midlands.

Due it the short history of the county many family historians do not notice its existence, indeed people born even as late as the 1990's when asked there place of birth might respond with one of the counties that the West Midlands was made up from such as Staffordshire, Warwickshire or Worcestershire.
