Do you have a collection of family videos sitting on a shelf? Do you use a webcam to chat with distant relatives? Videos are a great way to capture special events and communicate with your family, but until now, they've been hard to organize and share. From baby's first steps to wedding anniversaries, from family reunions to family interviews, now you can use Geni to organize and share your family videos.

Geni's new video feature is free, fast and private:

  • Unlimited uploads with no fees
  • Simple upload process
  • Your videos are only viewable by your family

You can instantly tag which family members are in your videos and permanently archive your videos by adding them to an event on your family timeline. Multiple people in your family can tag their media (photos and videos) with a common event, thereby creating a virtual scrapbook of that event. For example, multiple family members can instantly create a virtual scrapbook of a wedding by tagging all their photo albums and videos with that event.

Adding videos to individual profiles and events adds another dimension to your family history. Your Family will be notified when you upload new videos, so they can view the videos and add comments. Uploading a video is easy, so get started today!


Video Specifications

There is no file size limit, but videos must be less than 30 minutes long.

Although anyone in your family can view the videos on Geni, one of the following browsers is required to upload a video:

Windows

  • Internet Explorer 6
  • Internet Explorer 7
  • Firefox 2
  • Firefox 3

Mac

  • Safari

Video Uploader Installation

You must install software on your web browser to upload videos. The installation procedure is simple and you only have to do it once.

Follow these instructions to install the plug-in:

Internet Explorer 6 on Windows

  1. Click "Add video" from anywhere on geni.com
  2. Click the text that says "Click here to install the following ActiveX control 'Geni Publisher' from 'On2 Technologies, Inc."
  3. Select "Install ActiveX Control"
  4. Click "Install" when you see the dialog that says "Do you want to install this software?"
  5. You're done. You should see "Drag a video from your computer here"

Internet Explorer 7 on Windows

  1. Click "Add video" from anywhere on geni.com
  2. Click the text that says "Click here to install the following ActiveX control 'Geni Publisher' from 'On2 Technologies, Inc."
  3. Select "Install ActiveX Control"
  4. Click "Install" when you see the dialog that says "Do you want to install this software?"
  5. You're done. You should see "Drag a video from your computer here"

Firefox 2 on Windows

  1. Click "Add video" from anywhere on geni.com
  2. Click "Edit Options..." in the yellow bar at the top of your browser
  3. Click "Allow" when you see the dialog box
  4. Click "Close"
  5. Quit the browser and launch again
  6. Go to http://www.geni.com/video/upload
  7. Click "Install Now" when you see the dialog that says "Software Installation"
  8. Click "Restart Firefox"
  9. You're done. You should see "Drag a video from your computer here"

Safari on Mac

  1. Click "Add video" from anywhere on geni.com
  2. Click "Click here to download and install the Plug-in"
  3. The Geni Publisher Installer will run
  4. Click "Continue" on the introduction page
  5. Click your primary HD from the list
  6. Click "Continue"
  7. Click "Install"
  8. When installation is successful, click "Close"
  9. Go back to Safari and quit
  10. Relaunch Safari and go to http://www.geni.com/video/upload
  11. You're done. You should see "Drag a video from your computer here"

Troubleshooting Video Uploads

  1. First, play your video on your computer and make sure it runs through completely with sound.
  2. Quit your browser, uninstall the plug-in (see instructions below), restart your computer and try again (you'll need to re-install the plug-in before uploading again)
  3. If you have a PC, try uploading your video using a different browser. You can use Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Firefox 2 or 3.
  4. Try installing new video codecs. Use these instructions:
  5. If possible, try encoding the video into a different format. You can use a free program called Avidemux. See the instructions below to download the program.
  6. If none of these work, email us (at help@geni.com) the following information:
    • Platform: PC or Mac
    • Browser: name and version number
    • Computer: brand and specifications (if you know them)
    • Original video file: if feasible

Uninstalling the Video Uploader Plug-in

Windows/Internet Explorer Active X Control

  1. In the File menu, select the Open item
  2. Open the folder: C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files\
  3. Right-click Geni Publisher
  4. Select Remove

Windows/Firefox PlugIn

  1. Go to the Windows menu and click the Add-ons item
  2. Click the Plugins button
  3. Select Geni Publisher and click the Remove button
  4. Restart Firefox

Mac OS X/Safari PlugIn

These steps require administrator privileges. If your hard drive is not named "Macintosh HD," please substitute the name of your drive in the instructions below:

  1. Close Safari
  2. Remove the file genipublisherhowelladpcm.component from Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/
  3. Remove the file Geni Publisher.plugin from Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
  4. Open Safari


Known Issues

There is a known issue caused by the presence of an MPEG1 video track in the input file. The problem occurs *only* when the input file has an MPEG1 video track.

A possible work around is conversion to an alternate format prior to loading the file with the plugIn.

There is a useful and free video conversion program called Avidemux. You can use it to convert an mpeg-1 to a DivX avi file.

Once in Avidemux:

  1. open your original video
  2. change the Video dropdown to "MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid4)"
  3. keep the Audio dropdown as "Copy"
  4. keep Format as "AVI"
  5. select Save Video from the menu
  6. upload the resulting file to Geni

Video Tagging

'Tagging' a photo is a way to indicate who is in a Video on Geni. You can tag a Video with a person's name by clicking the 'edit' link next to 'In This Video' under any Video. You can choose a name from the pop-up list or start typing the name of a family member or a family friend. When you have added the name of each person in the video click done.

You may also tag family members using their relationship to you, for example, you may tag your mother, father, brother, sisters or cousins. By entering the relationship, a list of members that fit that relationship will be included in the tagger.

This video will now be associated with each person you tagged.
