Social Security Death Index
The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is a database of death records from the United States Social Security Administration's (SSA) Death Master File. The records of 80 million people who died after 1940 are included in this database.
Each record contains the following information, if the data is available to the SSA: social security number, name, date of birth, date of death, state or country of residence (prior to Mar 1988), ZIP code of last residence, and ZIP code of lump sum payment. The SSA does not have death records for everyone. The absence of a particular person in the SSDI is not proof that a person is alive.
