Hampshire Meanings & Origins
Commonly accepted meaning and origin
- regional name from the southern English county so called, which derives its name from Hampton (i.e. the port of Southampton) + Old English scir ‘division’, ‘district’.
- regional name from the area of Hallamshire in southern Yorkshire, named from Hallam + Middle English schir ‘division’, ‘administrative region’ (Old English scir). The surname is most common in Yorkshire, where this second derivation is most likely to be the source.

Hampshire Heraldry and Coat of Arms
A Note on Heraldry
"Coats of arms are granted to individuals, not families or surnames. A form of property, coats of arms may rightfully be used only by the uninterrupted male line descendants of the person to whom the coat of arms was originally granted. Such grants were (and are) made by the proper heraldic authority for the country in question."
