Adding Surnames

(For this example I will use the surname "Gene", substitute your surname for "Gene")

To create the "Gene" surname page, type "Gene" into the search box. If the page for "Gene" does exist it will bring up the page for the "Gene" surname. You may edit and add to the existing page. If the page for the "Gene" surname doesn't exist, it will give you the option to create a new page. Write whatever you would like for your surname, maybe some background information, famous people with this surname, etc. You have now created a page for your surname.

Now, to make your surname page show up in the List of Surnames you will need to add a template. At the bottom of your surname page add {{surname}}. This will tell Geni Wiki that your name needs to be categorized in the List of Surnames. To make your surname show up under one of the Heritage Sub-categories, you will need to add that Sub-Categories template. For example, if "Gene" is a surname originating from Genie, you would type {{genie}}. The specific template you need for your surname can be found at the top of each Sub-Category.

Creating a new Heritage template

(For this example I will be using the "Genie" heritage, substitute your heritage for "Genie")

To create a new template for your Heritage, first you must create the new Template page. In the search box type "Template:Genie", again if the heritage template already exists, you don't need to create it. If the heritage template doesn't exist, you will be given the option to create it. On the Template edit page, copy and paste the following text into the edit box:

<includeonly>[[Category:Genie Surnames]]</includeonly><noinclude>

== Usage ==
Place <nowiki>{{Genie}}</nowiki> at the bottom of surname pages or within sections of
disambiguation pages that list people by Genie family name.

''This template will auto-categorize articles that include it into [[:Category:Genie Surnames]],
unless specified not to.''</noinclude>

Notice there are four occurrences of "Genie" that need to be changed.

Hit "Show Preview at the bottom to make sure it looks ok. If yes Save, if no see if you can determine the error.

Creating a new Heritage Surnames article

After creating the above template, your names are going to need somewhere to display, and after you save the page for your template, you will notice a link at the bottom of your template. In the case of the template above it will link to "Genie Surnames". Click this link, and it will give you the option to create a new Heritage Surnames page, already named for you. In that edit page just paste the following text:

{{CatAZ}}
{{surname}}

That's it, nothing to change, nothing else to modify.

Preview it, Save it, and you are all done.

Now anytime you type {{Genie}} at the bottom of your page it will automatically enter the "Genie Surnames" Category.
