Carnevale is an Italian surname related to the festival of Carnival. The etymology of the name is disputed - it may be a derivation from the Latin "carne vale," or "farewell to meat", or from the Italian "carne levare," or "removal of meat." Both meanings relate to the Lenten abstention from meat that follows the Carnival celebration.
