Writing System

From the 26 letters in Latin Alphabet, 23 are the most used in Portuguese. K, W and Y are used only in some words an expressions.

Some words use cedila (Çç), whose sound is similar to s.

For indicating stress, in some words an accent is used on a vowel. The accent whose can be acute(´), indicating the vowel is open, or circumflex (^), inticating the vowel is closed. 'I' and 'U' can not be closed.

Unit System

Brazil uses the metric system. Height is therefore measured in meters and centtimeters, weight is measured in kilograms and distance is measured in kilometers.

Temperature is an exception, which is usually measured in degrees Celsius, the Kelvin scale is used only in scientific texts. Other exception is speed, which is measured in Km/h sometimes.
