When you create a Geni account we give you a temporary password so that you can have immediate access to your family tree and profile. We recommend that you set a permanent password that is easy for you to remember. Until you set a permanent password your profile can be edited by other family members. Setting a permanent password makes your profile editable by only you.


How do I get my password if I don't know it?

Click 'Don't know your password?' on the login page. We will ask for your email address and then we will send you an email with a link to reset your password.


How do I change my password?

We will ask you to create a permanent password the first time you login. After that, you can change your password at any time on the Settings page.


How do I change my login email address

You can add a new email address by going to your Settings. If you want to receive Geni notifications to the new email address make it your default email address. You can login to Geni using any of your email addresses.


How do I change the email address that Geni sends notifications to?

Go to your Settings page and enter the email address that you would like to have future notifications sent to. Make sure you indicate that you would like that email address to be your default email address by clicking the button next to it. Finally, click 'save' at the bottom of the page.


Why should I set a permanent password?

When you sign up or are invited to join Geni we give you a temporary password so that you can go straight to your family tree and profile without having to fill in any forms. Until you set a permanent password your profile can be edited by other family members. Setting a permanent password makes your profile editable by only you.


How do I replace an email address?

In order to replace the e-mail address on your account, you first have to add an alternate email address to your profile. After you add a second e-mail address you will be able to delete the original e-mail address.

To add an email address to your profile, click on your name on the top right of your screen when you are logged into Geni. This will take you to your profile. Then click on 'Edit Profile' on the left. On this page you can add 'Additional Email' addresses. Make sure you click 'Save Changes' at the bottom of the page when you are done entering the new email address.

Once you have added the new email address, you can delete the original email address. Just click on 'Edit Profile' again and click on 'delete' next to the email address you want to delete.
