Descendants of William White, Mayflower Passenger

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM (MAYFLOWER)1 WHITE was born 10 November 1591 in England, and died 21 February 1620/21 in Plymouth Colony, MA. He married SUSANNA 11 February 1611/12 in Leyden, Holland. She was born 1594 in England, and died 1675 in Marshfield, Plymouth, MA.

Notes for WILLIAM (MAYFLOWER) WHITE:

MAYFLOWER INDEX # 37,837 MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS section on William White family by Ruth and Robert Sherman, officers of Mayflower Society and descendants of William. - - "Little is know about Pilgrim William White. Governor Bradford says that among the Mayflower passengers were 'Mr. William White and Susanna his wife and one son called Resolved, and one born a-shipboard called Peregrine, and two servants named William Holbeck and Edward Thompson.' In 1651, he added that 'Mr. White and his two servants died soon after their landing. His wife married with Mr. Winslow.... His two sons are married and Resolved hath five children, Peregrine two, all living. So their increase are seven." "William and Susanna White left England with son Resolved. At Cape Cod, on November 11, 1620 according to the old calendar, William was one of the forty-one signers of the Mayflower Compact. Two to three weeks later son Peregrine was born, the first English birth in Plymouth Colony. Susanna was widowed in February. She became the first colony bride in May, marrying Edward Winslow, a Mayflower passenger who had lost his wife a few weeks before. At least four children were born to Susanna and Edward." "About 1638, the Winslows with young Peregrine and Resolved White, moved to Green Harbor, now called Marshfield. Edward Winslow rose to prominence as Governor of Plymouth Colony, became Colony representative to England, and at last was persuaded to use his diplomatic skills for Oliver Cromwell, heading up a joint commission with the Dutch to award reparations for damage caused to Danish ships. Interesting though it may be to imagine Susanna sharing those years in London with him, hostess to officials from various governments, no evidence has been found to indicate that she accompanied her husband on any of his trips to England. One of the few extant documents mentioning her by name is a "bill of sale" in which 'Susanna Winslow wife of Mr. Edward Winslow of Marshfield and his Agent in this tyme of is Absence in England' sold for ten years the services of an Indian man. The agreement was dated 12 (11) 1647, that is 22 Jan. 1648 by our calendar." "Edward spent the last six years of is life in England. His will in 1654 as a resident of London, leaves his land in New England to son Josiah "hee allowing to my wife a full third parte thereof for her life also." If Susanna were living in London at that time, it would have been natural to provide for her there as well." No further record of Susanna has been found. She must have died before 1675 when her son Josiah Winslow made no proviso for her in his will, although he made bequests to numerous relatives and friends....Susanna (----)(White) Winslow was not the sister of Dr. Samuel Fuller as is often claimed. Samuel and Edward Fuller who came on the Mayflower were sons of Robert of Redenhall, England. Robert had no daughter Susanna." "For many years genealogists have assumed that Pilgrim William White spent his early married years in Holland, marrying at Leiden in 1612 and burying children there in 1615 and 1616. A critical examination of Leiden sources casts heavy doubt on this assumption."

Generation No. 2

2. RESOLVED (MAYFLOWER)2 WHITE (WILLIAM (MAYFLOWER)1) was born 1615 in Leyden, Holland, or England, and died Aft. 19 September 1687 in Salem, Dorchester, MA. He married (1) JUDITH (1ST) VASSALL 05 November 1640 in Scituate, Plymouth, MA, daughter of WILLIAM VASSALL and ANN KING. She was born 1619 in Stephney, Middlesex, England, and died 03 April 1670 in MARSHFIELD, Plymouth, MA. He married (2) ABIGAIL LORD (2ND) 05 October 1674 in Salem, Essex, MA. She was born Abt. 1606, and died 27 June 1682 in Salem, Essex, MA.

Notes for RESOLVED (MAYFLOWER) WHITE: !AFN: B6D3-6F !MAYFLOWER DESC: Index #37,795. "Resolved came to Plymouth in 1620 with his parents aboard the Mayflower, and after 1632 moved to Marshfield with his mother and stepfather. He resided in Scituate during the period when his children were born--1640 to 1656. He and Judith, and perhaps some of their children, travelled to Barbados in 1656/7, presumably to aid in the settling of the estate of her father, for on 17 March 1656/7 'Resolved White of Scituate in New Plymouth in New England, gentleman, and his wife Judith, daughter of William Vassall of this Island' deeded land in the Barbados, a deed acknowledged on March 20th by 'Resolved White's wife' and recorded at Barbados only four days later." "The family moved to Marshfield in 1662. and were still there in 1670 to at least 1682, being a freeman of Salem in 1680. He served in King Philip's War under Capt. Manning in 1676. He returned to Marshfield after the death of his second wife, for on 13 March 1684/5 'Resolved White of Marshfield' and sons Samuel and Josiah quit-claimed rights to an island, in return for which grantee John Branch would maintain Resolved's eldest son, William. We assume Resolved was still living on 19 Sept. 1687 when William quitclaimed his rights in the island to John Branch, mentioning his father, but not as 'deceased,' and mentioning the earlier deed of my father Mr. Resolved White.' The authors have found no evidence to support the claim of Pilgrim genealogist George E. Bowman that Resolved died between 1690 and 1694, no the oft-found statement that he died in Salem."

Notes for MARY TAYLOR: The Descendants of Joel Jones Author: Elbert Smith Call Number: CS71.J76 This book contains the history and genealogy of the Joel Jones family of Massachusetts. Bibliographic Information: Smith, Elbert. The Descendants of Joel Jones. The Tuttle Company. Vermont 1925. SMITH GENEALOGY LEMUEL SMITH, SR., born (prob.) Mar. 13, 1736, married first Polly White, in Brookfield, Mass., Mar. 27, 1760. They took out their license, or declared their intention, as the custom then was, on Feb. 16, 1760, at Brookfield, a little town about ten miles East from Ware. Polly White was the daughter of Josiah White and Mary Tailer, who were married Apr. 28, 1737. Polly White had two brothers, Josiah White, Jr., born Apr. 1, 1745, and Caleb White, born July 31, 1747. Caleb White married Rebecca Marsh, Feb. 26, 1767.

Polly White Smith died some time between Apr. 21, 1770, and the year 1782. We do not know the date. We do not know the names or birth dates of any of her children, except that of Lemuel Smith, Jr., who was born Apr. 21, 1770.

Lemuel Smith, Sr., married for his second wife, Mrs. Submit Cutler, widow of William Cutler, who had one small son, William Cutler, Jr., who was born May 30, 1775. Lemuel Smith, Sr., and his second wife, Submit, had four children at least, as was disclosed when the writer examined the old original record book of the Town of Ware, in the Town Hall at Ware, in June 1923. This one book happened to be out of the building when the old Town Hall burned in 1865. There was no record of the marriage of Lemuel Smith and Submit Cutler in this book. The probabilities are that the marriage took place elsewhere, and not at Ware.

Lemuel Smith, Sr., probably came into Ware, Mass., about 1760, or a few years before. The town was being settled and organized between 1750 and 1760. Just what place he lived in prior to that, or where the family came from we do not know. There are a number of Smith families now living at Ware, but they are all of recent arrival, and none of them are descended from Lemuel Smith. The family came into Ware, and a hundred years ago had apparently all left. A gap exists in the history of the various Smith families in Massachusetts from about the year 1690 to 1740. Our branch almost certainly dates back to from 1640 to 1650, and probably to before 1640. But from present information it is impossible to tell from which one of the 40 or more early Smith families, Lemuel descended.

She was born 17 September 1772 in Putney, Windham, VT, and died 15 October 1853 in Putney, Windham, VT.

Notes for REV. BROUGHTON WHITE: Ref "Butterfield Family," Ruth was the oldest child in a family of 11 children. Putney, VT is located only a few miles over the state line from Westmoreland in southwestern NH so Ruth in some way became acquainted with Broughton White of Westmoreland, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1797. Later he took up the study for a C ongregational minister and may have visited the Congregational church in Putney in earlier years where the Parker family was very well known. He served as Principal at Chesterfield Academy until 1799 but did not begin to sstudy for the ministry until 1810, the year when the next to his youngest child was bor, Fannie Britton White. He preached at Lempster, Rockingham, and Dover, and previously the family had lived at Chesterfield, Gilson, and Winchester; he was ordained at Washington in 1818. There were six daughters and one son born, the son being eldest and was born a year after their marriage in 1798, while the family lived at Westmoreland, NH.

Notes for HARRIETT AMELIA WHITE: Ref "People of Putney," of her it has been said that she was converted whle attending a "young ladies school" in Putney in 1816; that she was a f ine, inteligent woman, a true paprtner with her husband in the minisstry, and a well-loved mother of the seven children later born to them.

Notes for REV. AMOS FOSTER: Ref "People of Putney," one of the men whose influence was deply felt in the town was Rev. Amos Foster, minister of the Congregational Church for 28 years, and during whose ministry 242 persons were received into membership.

Rev. Foster graduated from Dartmouth in 1822. He assisted his family in prtially supporting himself by teaching school in the midwinter months in Westmoreland, NH where he met his future wife. Following two years of theological study, he was licensed to preach in February 1824. His first pastorate was in Canaan, NH, where he ws ordained on March 2, with President Tyler of Dartmouth preaching the ordination sermon.

Rev. Foster's early years were busy years--he preached twice and sometimes three times on Sundays, and then sermons were not the short affairs they are at present. For this he received the sum of $450 early in Putney, and the use of the parsonage. He was installed in Putney on Feb. 13, 1833, as a result of a previous invitation to speak here from Rev. E. Andrews.

Notes for DANIEL FREEMAN NASH: Ref. Biographical Review: "Daniel F. Nash, of Portland, who, as a financier, manages large and varied inerests, his private busines being trade in stoves, furnaces, heating and pumbling apparatus, and manufacturing tinware, copper, and sheet iron, was born in Portland, October 19, 1858. His parents were Daniel W. and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Nash, his father being a native of East Raymond, Me., borni n December 1827, his mother of Portland, born in 1833. Daniel W. Nash, who also was a stove dealer, senior partner of the firm of O. M. & D W. Nash, a well-known stove firm of Portland, died in June 1883. His wife also has passed away. They reared three children--Ella Frances, wife of Peter S. Nickerson; Carrie Adelaide, wife of Frank M. Strout; and Daniel F., our subject.

Daniel F. Nash attended the public schools of Portland, graduating from the high school in 1878. He subsequently took a course of study at the Portland Business College, and earned his first salary as book-keeper for O. M. & D. W. Nash, his uncle and father. After the death of ihs father he son purchsed his inerest, and the business was continued without change of name. In 1891 Mr. O. M. Nash died; and our subject became sole proprietor of the enterprise, still retaining the original firm name. The business, which is one of the oldest of its kind in Portland, has materially increased since Mr. Nash became its manager. He has added plumbing and steam and hot water apparatus to the stock; and his trade, which is mainly local, is very extensive. He employs a large number of men, and occupies five floors of the building at 6 Exchange Street, where he has hardly room for his increasing business. Mr Nash is a member of the Merchants' Exchange of Portland and a stockholder in the following corporations: the Portland Steam Packet Company, International Steamship Company, Portland Railroad Company, Portland Water Company, Standish Water and Construction Company, Underwood Spring Water Company; and he is also a stockholder in the Merchants National and First National Banks. He part or whole owner of various vessels, including steamboats, schooners, brigs and barquest. In fact, his inerests are so many and various that it seems hardly possible for one man to attend to them all; but he neglects nothing, and every enterprise with which he is connected prospers.

In December 1883, Mr. Nash was married to Miss Flora R. Parker, a native of Putney, VT, daughter of Henry M. Parker; and three children have brightened their home--Edith Marion, Mabel Frances, and Arthur Freeman.

In politics Mr. Nash is a Republican. He was elected a member of the City Council in 1894 from Ward 7, and re-elected this year, during both terms serving as a member of the Committee on Finance. He has passed the thirty-second degree of Masonry, belonging to Portland Lodge, No. 1; Greenleaf Chapter, No. 13, St. Albans Commandery, No. 8; Portland Copuncil, No. 4; and Maine Consistory, Kora Temple, N. M. S. He was a charter member of Iona Lodge, No. 21, Order of the Eastsern Star; is Past Noble Grand of Harmony Lodge, No. 19, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he has been a Trustee for a number of years; a member of the Grand Lodge of Maine; Past Chief Patriarch of Eastern Start Encampment, No. 2, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he is also a Trustee; a member of the Grand Encampment of Maine; a charter member of the Grand Canton Ridgely, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and a Director in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Relief Association. He was a charter member of the Woodbine Lodge, Daughters of Rebecca, and of the Royal Society of Good Fellows, of which he is also a Trustee; is Past Chancellor and Trustee of Pine Tree Lodge, Knights of Pythias; a member of the Grand Lodge of Maine of the same Order; a charter member of Samoset Tribe, No. 21, Independent Order of Red Men; and he belongs also to the Young Men's Christian Association, and to the social organization known as the Portland Fraternity. Both Mr. and Mrs. Nash attend the Williston Congregational Church of Portland. Their home, which is at 277 Spring Street, is one of the handsomest in the city."

Need to verify further--cannot tie him to this family. We do know of several Boak-Boake families throughout America but we have not been able to establish a direct connection. Th e Boake family of Canada are related to our American family as their antecedents came from the John Boake family of Co. Tipperary, Ireland, as did our Abel.

Notes provided by Janet Morton, Halifax, NS: 7. FREDERICK WILLIAM4 BOAK (EDWARD3, ROBERT2, WILLIAM1) was born January 28, 1865. I think I already sent you all I had on Frederick, but just in case, here it is again:

Descendants of Frederick William Boak

Generation No. 1

1. FREDERICK WILLIAM4 BOAK (EDWARD3, ROBERT2, WILLIAM1) was born January 28, 1865.

Notes for FREDERICK WILLIAM BOAK: WENT TO USA

From Brunswick St United records 1902-1945 D02919

More About FREDERICK WILLIAM BOAK: Christening: September 17, 1865

Children of FREDERICK WILLIAM BOAK are:

i. SON5 BOAK.
ii. DAU BOAK.

The BOAK name is pronounced with a long O, like boat but with a "k". Frederick's uncle - my great-great-grandfather - Sir Robert James Boak, was heavily involved with the West Indies trade, and owned quite a few ships. There were no Boaks who actually worked as fishermen, but a number of them were involved in the industry, through business and trade. They would buy cod, salt it, and sail it down to the West Indies to trade for rum and molasses.

I live in Nova Scotia, not far from Halifax, where most of my Boaks were born and raised. Unfortunately, I don't get to the archives in Halifax as much as I'd like to, since every time I go to Halifax, I seem to spend most of my time visiting with friends and family.

As you can see from the info I sent you, Robert's daughter, Lillie, died of TB in Montreal - I'm not sure of the year, but probably around 1915, and it doesn't sound like she was married. But I have no information on his son, Eddie. Have you come across anything on him? How did you find the census info for Portland Maine? Was it on the internet, or did you use the Mormons' resources? Perhaps, if I'm lucky, the family stayed in Portland, and I can trace them there.

I am not sure about voting lists back in 1892. I know it was a lot easier to travel from one country to another in those days - perhaps they weren't as strict about voting privileges then, either. I will do some research on that question.

Did Abbie have any brothers or sister who Ethelind could have gone to live with? I was thinking that she could also have gone with Robert & Mary, but as she is not listed on the 1900 census with them, this isn't likely.

I'm still not entirely comfortable with the 1900 Chatham, Ont census info, which shows Fred with a wife Isabella, even tho the occupations are the same. The dates are too far off. There is a line of Boaks in Ontario as well, who aren't related to us, and since Frederick isn't a rare name, it is possible that this might be one of their line. I will have to think about that and see if there's something else I can do to verify that it is the same man. If he was just lying about his age to appear younger for his wife, I would've thought he'd at least use the same month & day as his real birthday, and just change the year. And if it is the same person, then I wonder what happened to him & his son. Lots of questions, eh?

Well, I want to get this off to you tonight, so I will stop here for now. Hope to hear from you soon!

-- Janet Morton Have a nice day! :>)
